CarSite Verdict:  4/5
This is the cleanest and most economical model in the C Class Coupe range and on top of this, it is a strong rival to the Audi A5 and the BMW 3 Series Coupe. As well as being economical it is also comfy and has great handling and an impressive engine.

PROS:  The car handles superbly and the efficient diesel engine keeps running costs low.

CONS:  Pricey, the rear seats are difficult to access.

Behind the Wheel

The diesel engine produces 168bhp and 295lb-ft of torque and the 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY can get from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 144mph. The twin-turbocharged diesel engine offers smooth, refined performance which is set to make this a popular car.

The steering is well weighted and the brake and throttle pedals are very smooth, making for a rewarding driving experience. Body control is kept in good check and the car feels incredibly poised and balanced thanks to its rear wheel drive chassis. The ride is very comfy, with Britain's potholed roads and motorways barely being felt.

Looks & Equipment

Looks-wise, the 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is a good rival to the Audi A5 and BMW 3 Series. The new model is 41mm lower than its predecessor giving it an extra sporty look, and it is a look that Mercedes believe will appeal to the younger car buyer. Overall, the look is very striking and will appeal to buyers who want a striking, sporty looking coupe.

The interior is very nice and it looks like everything has been fitted and finished to a high standard. A nice feature is the dark, soft-touch dashboard which is inlaid with white carbon fibre swathes of trim. The three spoke steering wheel adds a touch of sportiness to the car and the instrument binnacle now extends over the centrally mounted sat-nav and information screen. The seats are very supportive and should keep you comfortable even on a long journey.

Kit wise you get halogen headlights and front fog lights, hill holder, an audio system with digital media card reader and a CD player that reads MP3 CDs, a radio that receives AM/FM and RDS, six speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, sat-nav and imitation leather upholstery.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Thanks to the 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY's coupe shape, there is limited rear head and legroom and getting into the back seats can be tricky. There is 450-litres of boot space which is 5 litres less than the Audi A5 offers, but it is 10 litres more than you get in the 3 Series Coupe. The parking sensors help making tricky parking a bit easier.

The saloon model of this car has had five manufacturer recalls since 2008, so build quality obviously requires some improvement. Mercedes build quality is legendary but the German firm seems to be dropping the ball a bit at the moment.

The C-Class Coupe is a very safe car and scored a full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The car is fitted with a range of safety features inclusing ABS, ESP and driver, passenger, knee, pelvis and side airbags. Blind spot, lane assist and speed limit assist technology is also available. A pop-up bonnet is fitted to increase pedestrian safety.

Value for Money

At £33,080, the C-Class Coupe 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is roughly the same price as its rivals from Audi and BMW.

The Merc offers astounding fuel economy, returning 55.4mpg on the combined cycle. Road tax should be cheap too in VED band E thanks to CO2 emissions of 133g/km. The 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY offers excellent value for money when you consider its impressive array of standard equipment and desirable image and it should hold on to its money very well indeed.
