This is a sports car which has been designed to deliver a thrilling driving experience allowing the driver to be able to use all of the power and speed available, but this has come at the sacrifice of a number of other comforts. The XKR-S is the most powerful sports car made for sale that Jaguar produce, and the looks are reminiscent of the racing cars, but the eye-watering retail price may deter many people.

PROS:  An intense and exhilarating driving experience is vital in this top level of the XK convertible range, and the speed and power delivered by the five litre engine means there will be fewer faster cars on the road.

CONS:  With the car highly tuned to deliver a responsive drive, the suspension is quite hard which does impact the ride comfort, and the looks may not be to everyone's taste.

Behind the Wheel

The convertible isn't quite as stable on the road as the coupe, but it still delivers excellent road handling and steering that goes from light in urban areas to weighted at speed, and the responsiveness is excellent. However, the sports suspension on the car is a little too firm for practical use on the rough British roads, and passengers may not enjoy the experience as much as the driver. The low stance of the car does mean that visibility isn't the best, but then again people won't be expecting the kind of position to be found in a 4x4, but the driving seat is adjustable to ensure comfort for every driver.

As you would expect from the most powerful Jaguar on the road, the XKR-S convertible can hit some eye-poppingly fast speeds, with a speed limiter keeping the car at a lightning quick 155mph. The acceleration is also superb, with this version going from 0-62mph in an amazing 4.8 seconds. Of course, such a car is never going to be the most fuel efficient, but many people will feel that this is a worthwhile sacrifice.

Looks & Equipment

The triangular headlights are sculpted into the aerodynamic bonnet of the XKR-S, and although some people may find the numerous air intakes to be a little garish, they definitely add to the racing car image. The back end is just as attractive, with a small spoiler adding to the look, and the black plastic protection panel contrasting nicely with the four exhaust pipes.

Although it is a car which is lightning quick and very attractive, it hasn't cut back on the luxuries, with electric steering wheel adjustment and power heated seats included in the package. The entertainment and communication features are also present with satellite navigation and a hands free phone kit built in. The alloy wheels are of course included as standard, and the power folding mirrors are another feature that adds to the feeling of quality in the car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Anyone who is looking at the XKR-S as a car to take the kids to school will certainly be disappointed, as this is a sports car designed for driving, not for carrying large amounts of luggage. In terms of the reliability of the car, Jaguars have certainly improved over recent years with fewer breakdowns and problems occurring in their models.

The driving aids are all present to help keep the XKR-S on the road, which is particularly important because of the power delivered by the V8 engine, and the potential for driving at speed. There are also plenty of airbags included in the car to keep the driver and their passenger safe should there be an accident.

Value for Money

The Jaguar XKR-S is a car that will only appeal to a very limited number of buyers, and the list price of £103,000 means that it will be a car for those select few who are willing to pay the price for a high performance sports car.

Although the XKR-S is expensive to buy, there are no savings in the running costs either, with the 5.0 litre engine delivering only 23.0mpg. It also has the highest possible insurance group, and depreciation will often depend on whether or not the right buyer can be found. In terms of the warranty, the XKR-S comes with a three year unlimited mileage warranty and three years' roadside breakdown assistance.
