Innovative technology is used to make the XJ Luxury a one-of-a-kind vehicle, pitting it against the likes of the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class.
It is costly and equally expensive to maintain, as is typical of a luxury car.
PROS: Exudes luxury both inside and outside. Precision handling. Luxurious ride.
CONS: Little headroom.
The XJ handles with precision, giving feedback every step of the way. Steering is accurate and sharp, while the suspension is adapted to the car’s steering, speed and body movements at every second to give a comfortable ride. Body roll is controlled and going through bends at high speed is so smooth you would think you were in a much smaller car. The car has high levels of grip, helped in part by wider rear wheels and tyres.
The magic behind the XJ Luxury’s power is a supercharged 3.0-litre V6, 24-valve, 2993cc diesel engine. It produces a maximum of 275bhp at 4000rpm and has torque figures of 442 lb-ft. With such figures, you can be sure you will be grinning throughout the drive, assuming you are too reserved to scream. It goes from 0-62mph in just 6.4 seconds and goes on to attain a top speed of 155mph.
As you would expect, the XJ is a rear-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic transmission. Gear shifts are not only fast and accurate, but are adapted by the system constantly to match the driving style, whether you are on economy, sport or normal.
Unfortunately, the engine is not fully hushed and gives a low rumble, even though road and wind noises are completely muted.
The XJ is a large (5127mm x 1899mm) saloon packed with personality and individuality. It has none of those common similarities you have come to expect from popular luxury cars. Rather, its panoramic roof is quite eye-catching and blends with the wraparound rear screen and rear pillars. It opens upwards and outwards to create additional space in the cabin. It is the front-end that looks familiar, if a little ordinary; but refined all the same, thanks to bi-function Xenon headlamps.
Over 90% of the XJ is built with top-quality aluminium and every curve and line is emphasized for good measure. Inside, the XJ exudes premium luxury. High quality leather and hand-stitched trimming are in their rightful place on the seats and door panels. In place of the common, hard plastics commonly associated with car interior detailing is chrome and ebony, both radiating opulence.
The equipment offering is lavish in the XJ Luxury. It is fitted with electronic power steering, central locking, standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), climate control, cruise control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, driver airbags, passenger airbags, front side airbags, engine immobilizer, rear parking sensors, alarm, leather seats, alloy wheels, Sat Nav, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity and CD player.
Even without any extras, the XJ is adequately equipped and competes well with the Mercedes S-Class. Metallic paint comes at £790.
Jaguar is one of Britain’s most luxurious brands, and is known for making comfortable, durable and refined cars. The brand name alone instils faith in the car. Top notch security is what defines the XJ from concept to assembly. No area or system is overlooked, and you are protected from all angles inside. Every occupant gets numerous airbags, the controls feature all manner of electronic driver aids and even the pedestrian is taken into consideration. The bonnet is spring-loaded to protect pedestrians in case of a collision.
Legroom is generous both in the cabin front and rear, but rear passengers draw the short straw because of the limited headroom. You will need to open the panoramic roof for a little extra space when carrying taller passengers.
Storage in the cabin and boot is not a problem and there are plenty of solutions to take care of all sizes of luggage. The boot itself gives a generous 520 litres with the seats up, which is enough to throw in your golf bags and a number of extras.
The vast instrument display covering navigation, ventilation/heating and entertainment is controlled using a touch-screen display. It takes time to get used to but becomes easy to operate once you familiarise yourself with it.
The XJ is a top luxury car and doesn’t come cheap. You will part with a cool £55,515 for this innovative car and as you would expect, that’s only the beginning. Being a high-value car, it will attract high insurance premiums, as can be predicted from its classification under group 48.
For its class and dimensions, the XJ returns an impressive 40.1mpg. Emissions averaging 184g/km are also decent for this class and attract a not-so-high £315 in VED.
