CarSite Verdict:  3.5/5
The Honda Jazz 1.4 EX-T CVT is very dull and, with its CVT automatic gearbox, it's clearly a car for the blue rinse brigade. If you can get past that though, you'll find a very well built, practical supermini.

PROS:  Japanese reliability, good looks, spacious cabin

CONS:  Pricey, dull to drive

Behind the Wheel

The Honda's 1.4-litre engine develops 98bhp and 94lb-ft of torque and it's fine for pottering around town. The CVT gearbox harms the performance slightly and 0-62mph takes slightly longer than in the manual - 13.1 seconds. Flat out you'll be doing 109mph which is perfectly acceptable for a car like this. On the motorway wind noise is apparent, which is a nuisance.

The Jazz feels safe on the road. It's hardly a barrel of laughs to drive but it grips well and the steering is nice and direct. The ride is a bit firm but still comfortable and the Jazz is reasonably well refined.

Looks & Equipment

The Jazz's interior is well equipped with great facilities such as MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth and satellite navigation. Bluetooth increases the driver’s safety when making phone calls from their mobile device as the technology automatically connects when the driver enters the car with their mobile phone.

The style of the interior can be improved with leather seating but this will be costly at £1,250.

Alloy wheels come as standard and metallic paint can be specified for an extra £440.

Electric front windows, electric door mirrors, climate control and cruise control also come as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Honda have a superb reputation for reliability and there is no reason to believe that the Jazz will spoil it. It comes with a 3 year/90,000 mile warranty.

The Jazz is a very safe car and scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. It comes fitted with drive, passenger and side airbags as standard.

The boot is a good size, offering 399-litres of space with the seats up which is very competitive for a car of this size.

Value for Money

The Honda Jazz EX-T CVT 5dr is available from £17,035 and this is quite pricey for a Jazz, albeit a Jazz with an impressive level of standard kit.

You'll get more than 51mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 128g/km place the car under VED band D which is perfectly respectable for a car of this type. Group 16 insurance should also be very affordable and, thanks to the Jazz's bank-vault build quality, you shouldn't have to fork out much on expensive repairs.
