PROS: The Fiat 500 1.2 Pop 3dr boasts unique and quirky looks and a small but willing engine. It is very attractively priced and has strong safety credentials.
CONS: The ride is choppy and the engine lacks refinement. The rear seats are cramped and the boot space is quite limited. Handling is unspectacular.
The Fiat 500 1.2 Pop 3dr is great for city driving thanks to its compact size and very light steering. Visibility is good and the dashboard is intuitive and easy to use. Although the driving experience is fun, the handling is not as sharp as its main rival - the Mini. The ride is choppy and unrefined and the steering lacks weight and feel. The engine makes its presence audible at high speeds but wind and road noise are not intrusive.
The Fiat 500 1.2 Pop has a 5-speed manual transmission with an optional 6-speed automatic. Its 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 69 bhp and 75 lb-ft of torque and propels the Fiat to 62 mph in a respectable 12.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 99 mph.
The Fiat 500 is a 4-seater hatchback. Compared to the Mini, the Fiat is shorter and narrower yet 3.1 inches taller. The retro dashboard is attractive, however it is made of cheap plastic. Despite the 500's size, there is plenty of interior cabin space.
Standard kit includes keyless entry, MP3 connectivity, six speaker sound system with CD player, electric front windows and electric door mirrors. Also included as standard are power steering and colour-coded bumpers. Optional extras include alloy wheels (£315), air-con (£525), climate control (£725), metallic paint (£440) and electric sunroof (£575).
The Fiat 500 is one of the safest small cars on the market today. Its Euro NCAP Occupant rating is a perfect 5/5 with a child NCAP rating of 3/5. It is fitted with 7 airbags as standard.
So far the Fiat 500 has proven to be a very reliable car.
In spite of its size the Fiat 500 has a 'big car' feel. The front seats are quite spacious for the driver and front passenger but taller rear occupants will be uncomfortable on longer journeys. The Fiat 500 offers 185 litres of boot space which expands to 550 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
For security, an engine immobiliser is fitted as standard.
The Pop 3dr is the base model Fiat 500 with a price of £9,900. It is certainly not the cheapest proposition on the supermini market but, due to the 500's popularity, resale values are likely to be very strong.
With a combined fuel consumption figure of 58.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 113g/km, the Pop 3dr will be cheap to run and environmental-friendly.
This version falls under Insurance group 5 and Road Tax Band C and Fiat offers a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.
