The 500 1.2 Lounge Dualogic is a chic city car. The Fiat is well priced and, with its retro-inspired looks, is more desirable than almost any other car in its class.

PROS:  The 1.2 Lounge model is fitted with a decent level of standard equipment including alloy wheels and Bluetooth connectivity. Its build quality is impressive and it's a good looking car. It also offers a good amount of cabin space for a car of its size.

CONS:  The small 1.2-litre engine can be nosiy at high speeds and lacks power and pull. The ride is harsh on uneven surfaces.

Behind the Wheel

The 500 1.2 Lounge Dualogic is fitted with a 1.2-litre petrol engine. The car accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 99mph. With just 69bhp and 75lb-ft of torque, the 500 is fine for city driving but on the open road the car's lack of grunt becomes apparent.

The 500 is at home in an urban environment. Its steering is light, if a little imprecise, making low speed manouevring easy. The engine is a little unrefined, especially at motorway speeds. Wind and road noise become apparent at high speeds. All-round visibility is good.

Looks & Equipment

The Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge has a retro look inspired by the original Fiat 500 of the 1950s. The dashboard is highly intuitive and easy to use. Build quality is first-rate but some of the materials used in the cabin are quite cheap.

This model comes as standard with a front passenger underseat box, leather steering wheel with audio controls, electric front windows, space saver spare wheel, split folding rear seat with headrest, alloy wheels, air-con, CD player with MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.

Optional extras include stability control (£315), climate control (£265), leather seats (£775), electric sunroof (£575), and rear parking sensors (£265).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Front passengers are afforded ample space but the seats lack lower back support. The rear seats are a tad cramped as legroom is quite tight. The Fiat 500 1.2 Dualogic Lounge version gets split/fold rear seats as standard which increases cargo space from 185-litres to 550-litres.

The 500 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. It comes with seven airbags, electronic stability control, Isofix child seat mounting points and ABS.

Standard security kit includes an immobilizer, central and remote locking and locking wheel nuts.

So far the Fiat 500 has proven to be a reliable car and is offered with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

At 1.65m wide and 3.55m long, this hatchback can be easily squeezed into the tightest parking space.

Value for Money

At £12,045, the 500 1.2 Lounge Dualogic is not the cheapest car in its class but, thanks to the car's desirability, resale values are likely to be strong. With a combined fuel economy figure of 60.1mpg, the 500 also promises to be cheap to run. The Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge Dualogic falls under insurance group 6 and VED band B so insurance and tax should also be very affordable.
