PROS: The Chrysler Ypsilon offers a touch of luxury in a small family hatchback. It is fun to drive and its distinctive appearance will be sure to make it stand out.
CONS: Chrysler are positioning the Ypslion as a luxury alternative to other small family hatchbacks, and the price reflects that. This is not the best value for money that you will get, and the build quality is disappointing considering the price.
Most people agree that this is an enjoyable car for city driving, with tight, accurate steering and good performance, although it can lack grip at times.
The 2 cylinder, 8 valve, 875cc petrol engine does reasonably well for its size, producing power of 85bhp at 5500rpm, and torque of 107lb-ft at 1900rpm, which translates through the 5-speed manual transmission to a top speed of 109mph and the ability to accelerate from 0-62 in a time of 11.9 seconds.
With its high front end and large grille the Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir SE is a very distinctive looking car. The Ypsilon has been built on the same platform as the Ford Ka and although these two models look nothing alike, they do share one thing in common - they are true 'marmite' cars that you are likely to either love or hate as soon as you see them.
Standard features include power steering, central locking, air con, and immobiliser, but you will have to pay extra if you want to get rear-parking sensors, cruise control or climate control.
With an elongated wheelbase the Chrysler Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir SE offers more storage space than its main competitors from Fiat and Ford, giving you 245-litres of boot space with the seats up and 820-litres with the seats down.
There have been concerns over the reliability, however, with many people reporting creaks and rattles, suggesting a low build quality.
In terms of fuel efficiency the car can manage 67.3mpg with CO2 emissions low at 99g/km - Road Tax and Congestion charge will be free to anyone who owns this car. This, combined with the fact that the Ypsilon is in insurance group 7 means that you will not have to pay too much to keep it on the road.
Although the running costs are going to be pretty low, the £13,195 list price for this car, combined with concerns over build quality which are likely to affect resale values, means that it is hard to claim that the Chrysler Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir SE offers buyers good value for money.
