For those interested in a family vehicle capable of decent performance levels, the Chrysler Delta 1.4 T-Jet 120 S is a viable option. However, there are much better cars out there for roughly the same outlay and there is little reason to consider purchasing the Delta 1.4 T-JET.

PROS:  Decent acceleration figures and a high power output give this model great performance. It's good looking too.

CONS:  The interior feels cheap in places. The engine is noisy. The Delta is outclassed by its rivals.

Behind the Wheel

With a maximum power output of 120bhp at 5000 rpm and torque figures of 152lb-ft at 1750rpm the 1.4 litre engine packs a fair punch and helps push the Delta to a top speed of 121mph. Acceleration is fairly rapid as well and the car is capable of reaching 0-62 mph in 9.8 seconds.

Despite the good power output the car is only really comfortable on straight, even road surfaces. Bends and corners result in a fair amount of body roll and potholes can be felt throughout the cabin.

Noise disruption is also high, especially during start-up. This makes the cabin a somewhat uncomfortable and noisy place to be, making the Delta less comfortable than rival models such as the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra.

Looks & Equipment

The Delta 1.4 T-JET is a good looking car but unfortunately, the quality of the interior lets the car down and has a poor fit and finish.

It comes with a decent range of standard kit. Standard features include power steering, central locking, electric front windows, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors and a CD compatible stereo system.

Cruise control and rear parking sensors are additional options which cost £275 apiece. The external appearance can also be enhanced with a metallic paint finish which costs an extra £550.

MP3 connectivity, a built-in sat nav system and Bluetooth connectivity are unavailable on this model which could make it unattractive to the average motorist considering the number of luxuries offered by other manufacturers.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Reliability shouldn't be an issue and the Delta 1.4 T-JET comes with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty. The interior feels well put together, even though some of the materials feel cheap.

In terms of practicality, the car is fairly spacious – making it ideal for family use. Seats are adjustable and the rear seats slide backwards and forwards to adjust the distribution of space within the cabin. Leg room is ample and this means passengers will not feel overcrowded or cramped.

Boot capacity is 380 litres with the seats in place and 1,190 litres when seats are folded down. This is decent for a car in this class but the Delta's high boot lip can cause problems when loading and unloading.

The car scored a five star rating for overall safety in the NCAP crash tests and comes fitted with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard features.

An alarm and immobiliser are also fitted as standard equipment to protect the car from thieves.

Value for Money

Priced at £16,695 the Delta 1.4 T-JET is roughly the same price as a basic 1.6-litre Ford Focus. However, the Focus is a much better car and the Delta is simply not cheap enough to offer a distinct advantage over the Ford.

Alongside this, the Delta falls under road tax band F thanks to its relatively high CO2 emissions of 146g/km. That being said the car comes under a relatively competitively price insurance group (14) which is a benefit for those concerned about running costs.

The Delta 1.4 T-JET will return 44.8mpg on the combined cycle and many of the car's competitors can do better than this.
