Chrysler Delta Car Reviews

The Chrysler Delta (Lancia Delta elsewhere in Europe) is an affordable 5-door hatchback that is set to compete in a segment that consists of many well known models, such as the VW Golf and Ford Focus. Its design is striking from both the front and rear, and ensures that it will not be confused with any other car on the road. This distinctive styling had a significant impact on the Ypsilon, which shares many design features.

Chrysler Delta Overview

Since the Delta is produced under the Fiat Group it benefits from the Fiat Powertrain engines, and the petrol MultiAir engines couple good performance with economy and refinement. There are a number of options available, a 1.4 litre petrol with two power outputs, or a 1.6 litre or 2.0 litre diesel unit. Engine noise is minimal unless it is really pushed, making the Delta a pleasant place to spend long motorway journeys. There is however a little wind noise due to the large wing mirrors.

Where this car is really impressive is the interior space. It is one of the largest in its class, and there are sliding and reclining rear seats, which means you can choose between acres of legroom or a huge boot. When the rear seats are in their most forward position, the boot is a massive 465 litres, and a sizeable 380 when they are as far back as they will go, which is still larger than the Golf and Focus. This innovation means the car really uses its interior space well. In addition to this there are a number of cubbies which offer handy storage areas for smaller objects.

There is decent adjustment for both the driver’s seat and steering wheel, which makes getting comfortable easy, but the seats could be a little more supportive. The dash is well laid out and finished to a good standard, with the cabin giving a feel of luxury and quality.

Background

The Delta is actually manufactured by Lancia, but marketed as a Chrysler in the UK and Ireland (since both companies are under the control of Fiat). The newest offering is the third generation of the Delta model, which was first produced in 1979 and gained a reputation as a sporty hatchback with rallying pedigree. A second generation was produced from 1993 before the model was discontinued in 1999.

The current generation is a return of the Delta name, although there is little resemblance to the original models. It was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008 and represented a reintroduction of the Lancia brand name to some European countries. A Chrysler rebadged version of the Delta made an appearance at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, and became available in the UK in 2011.

Summary

The Delta is striking family car. It represents an alternative to the mainstream Golf or Focus and does so at an affordable price with plenty of room and practicality.
