Its exterior is quintessentially American but the CTS coupe has been honed and fine tuned for European motorways and is quite adept. This car is competent but would benefit from the addition of a diesel engine option.

PROS:  The Cadillac CTS Coupe 3.6 V6 Sport is a rare sight in the UK. Its striking good looks are unique with its angular and refined shapes. Its build is unmistakably of good quality. The cabin is luxurious and posh while the engine is quiet and has enough pull.

CONS:  It’s an American car and as such has fairly high running costs. The CTS does not handle or ride with the same finesse as a BMW or Lexus or any of its European rivals. The engine’s power does not match the car’s size and there is no diesel option. It’s expensive.

Behind the Wheel

The Cadillac CTS 3.6 reaches 62 mph in 6.7s and its top speed is 140mph which is not really that impressive considering that it’s a V6 with a 24 valve 3564cc engine. The engine revs up at 322 bhp at 6800 and has a torque of 274 lb-ft at 4900. These figures are decent but not the best in the class. The mpg is low at 25.9.

The CTS coupe 3.6 is a lot heavier than its European rivals and this results in slightly slower performance. A contributing factor is the 6-speed automatic transmission which is slow to achieve full mode though the shifts are smooth.

The CTS has good body control, however this is not aided by the slow response of the transmission. The ride is quite stiff and road bumps and other imperfections are easily felt. The engine is smooth but some wind and road noise can be heard at motorway speeds. Rear visibility is a big concern.

Looks & Equipment

The CTS Coupe 3.6 v6 is a well-designed car in spite of its powerplant or powertrain. Its interior is excellent and on par with its rivals from Lexus and BMW. While some cars in the same class use plastic on parts of the interior, Cadillac uses only the best materials for its centre stack, dashboard and other cabin surfaces. The switchgear is generic GM but the buttons and knobs are classy. In today’s digital world, it is refreshing to see an analog watch amidst CTS’s touch and audio navigation system.

Standard equipment is of a decent level. Inclusive are cruise control, electric mirrors, heated mirrors, front and rear electric windows, climate control, power steering, steering adjustment reach, steering adjustment rake and more. There are only two options available: metallic paint and electric sunroof.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The CTS is a 4-seater 4WD coupe. It is a fast and smooth car that can offer a comfortable long country ride over undulating plains and wide twisty lanes. The suspension is quite firm and the shock-damping is exact. The ride is smooth with superb body control on varied speeds. However the CTS Coupe’s major letdown is its size. It is simply too large and heavy to drive around.

There’s no want of space in the front but considering the CTS is longer than BMW’s 5-Series, the rear space is not exactly roomy since the headroom is limiting. Since the CTS coupe is a 4WD, a large transmission tunnel cuts the length of the car. The boot holds 344 litres which is big enough for weekend luggage.

Inclusive safety kit is on par with rivals. It is fitted with stability control and electronic brake force. It has air bags, ABS, belt-pretensioners, ISOFIX, traction control and a rear parking sensor. Standard security kits such as automatic door lock, alarm and immobilizer are inclusive. This car has not undergone the Euro NCAP tests. CO2 emission is high at 255g/km.

Value for Money

The Cadillac CTS Coupe 3.6 V6 Sport Luxury AWD Automatic 3dr is priced at a whopping £54,292. It is more expensive than a BMW 5-Series and a Jaguar XF. It falls under insurance group 44 and road tax band of M. With an mpg of 25.9 and a very high emission rate of 255g/km, the CTS coupe has a high running cost is far from environment-friendly.

With its high price comes a whole gamut of equipment. However, the resale value is not exactly as good as its European counterparts as Cadillac sells only a handful of CTS’s in the UK each year.

For such an expensive car, the Cadillac CTS-V Saloon 6.2 V8 is relatively unsophisticated. The car's brute power is undeniable, but at over £72k there are far better cars out there.
