The SDrive28i is a great car, with loads of power and speed, but with the same level of fuel efficiency as the slower 20i. The car comes with loads of equipment and looks great too.

PROS:  Great engine, sensational looks, fine handling

CONS:  Don't be fooled by the name - this has a two-litre four-pot engine

Behind the Wheel

The SDrive28i's 2.0-litre engine develops 245bhp and 258lb-ft of torque and reaches 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

The Z4 offers both controlled handling and a comfortable drive. The engine is strong and smooth with responsive and sharp handling and supple suspension. The ride is much smoother than it was in the old Z4 and the ride is relatively refined, although wind and road noise become evident at speed.

Looks & Equipment

The Z4 has 'challenging' looks but once you get over the strangeness of its design, you realise just what a fantastic looking car it is. The interior is very luxurious and is made from very high quality plastics.

The SDrive28i open top comes with leather seats, power steering, stability control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth as standard, with optional extras including cruise control for £255, rear parking sensors for £620 and satellite navigation for £2225.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Z4 is a very safe car and comes equipped with four airbags, Dynamic Stability Control inclusive of ABS, corning brake control, dynamic break control and dynamic traction control. Euro NCAP has yet to test the new Z4 but rest assured that a five star rating is in the offing.

The Z4 is also pretty spacious for a roadster with plenty of room in the cabin and a decent boot which offers 310-litres of space when the roof is up and 180-litres when the roof is down.

Reliability is unlikely to be an issue thanks to BMW's reputation for fastidious build quality.

Value for Money

The SDrive28i model costs £33,645 which is fairly reasonable given its power and good level of standard kit. It is also relatively economical, returning a combined 41.5mpg and producing CO2 emissions of 159g/km which ensure it falls under VED band G.

The SDrive28i offers more power than the SDrive20i, but matches the economy of the smaller engine, which makes it very good value. It should also hold on to its money very well as BMWs are renowned for their slow depreciation.
