PROS: Great looks, excellent performance, superb chassis, low running costs (for a Z4)
CONS: The other more powerful cars in the Z4 range are much more satisfying to drive
The Z4 is a great car to drive with a finely balanced chassis. The ride is much improved over the previous generation Z4 and the amount of grip on offer verges on the unbelievable. This is a proper driver's car.
The cabin is quiet with the roof up, with little wind and road noise at speed.
The SDrive20i has an 184bhp engine delivering 199lb-ft of torque at 1250rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 146mph.
The SDrive20i comes with leather seats, power steering, stability control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth as standard, with optional extras including cruise control for £255, rear parking sensors for £620 and satellite navigation for £2225.
The Z4 looks great and its long bonnet and sleek, angular lines make it a very desirable car. The interior is also beautifully finished and tastefully designed and the quality of the interior materials is exemplary.
The folding metal roof of the Z4 means that the cabin is much quieter than it would be underneath a fabric hood and the folding mechanism is one of the smoothest available.
BMW have a superb reputation for reliability and the Z4 should be a very dependable car.
It should be safe too with standard safety equipment including four airbags, Dynamic Stability Control inclusive of ABS, corning brake control, dynamic break control and dynamic traction control. The Z4 also comes with an alarm, deadlocks and an engine immobiliser as standard.
Space is not the reason people buyer a two-seat sports car and it should come as no surprise that the Z4 is not the most practical of cars. However, the space around the seats is good and the boot offers 310 litres with the roof up and 180 when it’s down.
The Z4 SDrive20i costs £29,480 and offers combined fuel economy of 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 159g/km, meaning it falls under VED band G.
The Z4 is a great car to drive and the fuel economy is not bad for a sports car. The price is expensive, but for a BMW sports car it is quite reasonable and the cheapest in the Z4 range. It also comes with a decent amount of kit.
BMWs have rock solid residuals and are therefore a relatively safe investment.
