If you are looking for a family car that delivers strong performance then the Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro SE 4dr could be the car for you. The 3.0 TDI Quattro SE is a reliable and comfortable model but poor green credentials and high running costs make other saloons, such as the BMW 5 Series 520d SE, a wiser investment.

PROS:  The car has a sporty and sophisticated look and is fitted with a powerful diesel engine which delivers strong performance levels. The car's cabin is spacious with top quality interior features and an advanced safety kit fitted as standard.

CONS:  The fuel economy could be better and green credentials are poor - pushing the vehicle into a higher road tax band. The engine requires regular fill ups and can rack up large fuel bills. In-car controls can be a little awkward and insurance premiums are high.

Behind the Wheel

The 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine gives the car a good power boost of 241.6 bhp at 4000-4500 rpm with torque figures of 368 lb-ft at 1400-3250 rpm. The car delivers good mileage at 47.9 mpg - better than the 34.4 mpg consumption of the 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE. Additionally, the diesel engine delivers a good performance with a top speed of 155 mph, going from 0-62 mph in an impressive 6.1 seconds.

The A6 range has lighter handling than rival cars with an agile feel for a big car. The range’s standard suspension gives the car god balance and good control but the steering is light and lacks feel. The range has adequate adjustment for the driver’s seat and steering wheel and the upper dashboard of the A6 is well organised which allows the driver to operate the car comfortably.

Looks & Equipment

The Audi A6 Saloon 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE 4dr looks very stylish with an attractive exterior and a well crafted and comfortable cabin.

The car comes fitted with high end driving technology including, stability control, alloy wheels, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, MP3 connectivity, a CD player system, Bluetooth, satellite-navigation, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors and an alarm and immobiliser to deter theft.

The range also comes with optional equipment including massaging front seats, television reception and all-LED headlights.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The A6 model comes with five seats and ample room in both the front and back seats making long drives comfortable for children as well as adults passengers. The range comes with a standard 530 litre capacity boot along with split/folding rear seatbacks.

The 3.0 TDI Quattro SE comes equipped with a top of the range safety kit with a five out of five NCAP rating. The kit consists of a stability control system and driver, passenger and front side airbags. The car model also comes with optional equipment like rear side airbags and a motorway steering system that helps the driver stay in lane on the motorway.

The 3.0 TDI Quattro SE comes with a three year warranty with 60,000 miles. The car incurs relatively lower running costs as compared to the 3.0 TFSI, coming under road tax band G and insurance bracket 35. With decent fuel economy, the car has better green credentials than the 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE with a EURO 5 emissions rating and a lighter carbon footprint of 156 g/km.

However, when compared to rival saloons in the large executive sector, the 3.0 TDI Quattro SE falls behind the BMW 5 Series 520d SE which boasts the same interior kit but better fuel consumption, stronger green credentials, lower running costs and purchase prices and a three year warranty on unlimited mileage.

Value for Money

The Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro SE is an expensive car priced at £39,110 but is slightly cheaper than the 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE. The car is a stylish and sophisticated saloon car which delivers performance and reliability and has a well-crafted and reliable engine which gives years of trouble-free service. The car comes with advanced driving and safety technology and enjoys good dealer services as well as Audi’s excellent quality and reliability record. The car’s popularity, performance and the Audi brand gives it excellent resale values.

However, the car is made for those with fat wallets with running costs and purchase prices both high. Value for money is low for the Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro and consumers could get more benefits for less money by investing in BMW's rival saloon - the 5 Series 520d SE - instead.
