The A6 is the Audi proposition for those looking for a luxurious driving experience, and is largely a car sold for executives who are often on the road. The 2.0 litre diesel engine is the basic one for the A6, but the driving experience is generally very good and gives its rivals the Jaguar XF and the BMW 5 Series some serious competition.

PROS:  A wonderfully spacious and comfortable interior offering real luxury for driver and passengers alike, offering good value in comparison with its competition.

CONS:  Not as exciting and interesting to drive as some of its rivals, but the engine can be a little noisy when it is being worked hard.

Behind the Wheel

The driving position is naturally very comfortable, and even though it is towards the entry level of the A6 range it is still very luxurious. The S line sporting package does give the car a firmer suspension which may not be to everyone's taste, but it does deliver a very good driving experience giving the driver plenty of control and grip in all but the most testing of conditions. The handling is responsive and does everything you would expect, and gives the A6 the feel of a smaller car when on the road.

The 2.0 litre TDI engine is able to give drivers a top speed of 141 mph, and this model can hit sixty miles per hour within 8.7 seconds. The power is more than enough for most people, but there is a little more noise when accelerating from the engine.

Looks & Equipment

The Audi A6 is up against some particularly stylish competitors in the XF and the 5 Series, but the revamped A6 is very attractive and can hold its own in the design stakes. The low front lights give the front end a look that is reminiscent of the BMW, and the alloy wheels mean that the A6 is a very attractive package from the outside.

Seating in the A6 cabin is as luxurious as you would expect, and with leather seats as standard then any journey will be made in comfort. Cruise control, satellite navigation, rain sensing wipers and front and rear parking sensors are all included in the A6 package as standard, but those who are looking for even more luxury can look for powered and heated seats among the optional extras. The only drawback is that some people may find the controls and the knobs a little bit fiddly to use regularly.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Similarly to most cars in the class safety has been given a high priority, and five star results from the Euro NCAP results for adults and children in the car. All of the security precautions that would normally be expected in a luxury car are to be found in the A6, and stereo and console options are specifically designed only to fit with the specific vehicle.

A large and spacious cabin makes the A6 a good car for transporting people over a long distance, and the leg room for those in the back is more than enough for all but the largest passengers. Significant boot space adds to the overall practicality of the car, and makes it ideal for those who have to travel regularly on a regular basis. The warranty of three years with the same amount of breakdown cover is standard for Audi vehicles.

Value for Money

This particular model of the A6 is listed at £32,495, but is closer to the entry level of the range, with 3.0 litre engines also available for those looking for a little more power. This A6 generally compares well with the 5 series and the Jaguar XF on price, although there isn't too much difference to be seen when comparing the prices.

The 2.0 litre TDI engine does have a much better fuel efficiency than the three litre equivalent, delivering an average 57.6mpg, and the lower tax and insurance premiums means that Audi itself is expecting most A6's they sell to have the 2.0 litre version of the engine under the bonnet. As with many of the other cars in the Audi range, their price holds very well, and depreciation is not too bad with a ready market for those who are selling their A6.
