This is the only petrol engine available in the A6 Avant range and it is more expensive than the more economical diesel version, which is better value for money and only slightly slower.

However, the TFSI is a fantastic engine for performance and the four-wheel-drive gives the estate great handling and lots of grip.

The SE trim is great value for money and comes with loads of equipment as standard.

PROS:  A very fast car with a powerful engine and spacious interior offered from the estate model. The four-wheel-drive delivers a smooth and controlled ride, and the SE trim comes with lots of equipment.

CONS:  The petrol engine is expensive to buy and not as economical as the diesel version.

Behind the Wheel

All the A6 cars are powerful estates even with the smaller engines in the range and the handling is great. The car has good grip, especially with the four-wheel-drive, but the suspension can be quite firm. The option of S line suspension is even firmer and makes the ride quite uncomfortable.

The engine is 2995cc and uses unleaded petrol with a fuel tank capacity of 65 litres. There is a seven-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox, which provides smooth acceleration.

The engine is not particularly refined and there is quite a lot of wind noise at high speeds and road noise on uneven ground.

The 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE has a 296bhp engine delivering 324lb-ft of torque at 2900-4500rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.

Looks & Equipment

The interior of the A6 is well-designed and high-quality, living up to the reputation of Audi as a stylish manufacturer.

The seat and steering wheel adjust comfortably and the dash is free from clutter and well organised.

The 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE comes with leather seats, power steering, cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, satellite navigation, climate control, stability control, alloy wheels, MP3 connectivity, and stereo as standard, with optional extras including metallic paint for £750.

For fuel economy, the A6 has a start/stop system and electromechanical power steering as standard, which allows for great efficiency and low CO2 emissions.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The A6 comes with all the safety equipment you would expect in a high-quality car including driver, passenger and front side airbags, alarm and immobiliser as standard. It also has stability control to prevent accidents and anti-lock brakes. There are front and back ISOFIX child seat mounting points and options to fit adaptive xenon headlights, lane-departure, a rear-view camera and blind-sport warning systems.

In the past few years, Audi’s reliability rating has suffered and the A6’s mechanical reliability did not do too well in the 2011 JD Power survey.

The boot is sizeable offering 565 litres with the seats up and 1680 litres with the seats down. The A6 Avant has got plenty of room for front and back passengers in both head and leg room.

Value for Money

The 3.0 TFSI Quattro SE model costs £41,130 and has a combined economy of 34.4mpg and CO2 emission rate of 190g/km. These figures are not too favourable and will equate to expensive running costs for the owner.

The diesel engines are much more efficient than the petrol versions and also cheaper to buy. The 2.0 litre engine is the best for a combination of performance and economy.

The SE trim is much better value for money than the S line, as it comes with all the same equipment as the pricier S line trim, which only adds the firmer sport suspension and a few style changes.

The resale value on the A6 Avant is great so it could be a worthwhile investment. Audi promise good service and reliability as well. Overall, value for money is not great.
