CarSite Verdict:  2.5/5
This model does not perform smoothly when driving at the limit, however it still has a certain “cool” factor. Nice-looking and aptly designed, but a weak resale value.

PROS:  The Alfa Romeo 159 version 1750 TBi Turismo 4dr is an attractive car with a turbocharged direct injection engine that presents a more forceful engine than its predecessor (156). It boasts of a comfortable cabin interior and is a breeze to drive, much in the same class as the Audi A4 and Mercedes C class series, but at a lower price.

CONS:  This car handles rather well at average speed but is a far cry from the BMW 3 series. The ride tends to be edgy, as this model is not as light to handle. The engine is overpowering for its front wheels. The car boot is narrow. The switchgear requires a frustrating amount of attention to operate.

Behind the Wheel

The Alfa Romero 159 is a front-wheel, manual, 4-cylinder, 16-valve Saloon with a combined mpg of 34.9. Fuelled with unleaded petrol, its top speed hits an ample 147mph and has the capacity to go from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds which is on par with the Saab 9-3, Passat and Audi A4-s. The 1742 cc engine produces an impressive 200bph with a torque of 236 ft-lb at 1400rpm.

The 1750 TBi Turismo 4dr offers an even ride if a little edgy. The suspension is clunky over bumps and on twisty roads, though the cars road grip is remarkable. Handling and ride is comfortable but not particularly enjoyable or smooth. Wind and road noise are reasonably low. Refinement is not as quiet as the BMW 3 Series or the Mercedes C class. The steering is precise, if a little stodgy at points and would be better with a quicker initial response. The Alfa Romeo 1750 TBi Turismo’s dashboard is fitted with both push-button ignition system and a key-slot. The cabin equipment and dials are well layed out and intuitive to use.

Looks & Equipment

The Alfa Romeo 1750 TBi Turismo 4dr has a well-designed and well-crafted interior. The dashboard is well-planned and laid out and definitely better than its predecessor. The materials used are good but are not quite equivalent to the quality of an Audi or BMW. Classified as a 5-seater saloon, the interior is roomy and on par with its competitors. The layout is typical but the boot is narrow and could be bigger.

Standard features include Alloy Wheels, Climate Control, Electric Front Windows, Electric Door Mirrors, Power Steering, Driver, Passenger and Front Side Air Bags, Traction Control, Anti-lock brakes , Deadlocks, Cruise Control, Immobilizer, MP3 Connectivity and Bluetooth. For added cost, leather seats, SAT NAV, Rear Parking and Metallic Paint, Split or Fold Seats and Electric Sunroof are optional.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Alfa Romeo 1750 TBi Turismo has a Euro NCAP Occupant Protection rating of 5/5, a pedestrian Euro NCAP Pedestrian Protection Rating of 1/5 and a 4/5 NCPA Child Protection Rating. It has a comprehensive safety kit with its 7 air bags and front-seat head restraints for avoiding whiplash. This manual version is under car insurance group 26, same as the Audi A3, BMW 1 series and Mazda MX-5.

Its CO2 emission rating is 182g/km. Boot space with the seats up is 405 litres. Warranty based on mileage is unlimited whereas warranty on paintwork is 3 years, and 8 years on corrosion perforation. The new Alfa Romeo 159 series has none of the reliability issues of earlier models. Safety and Security is on the same level as its German competitors.

Value for Money

The entry level Alfa Romeo 1750 TBi Turismo is competitively priced against the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. The 34.9 mpg is low and its emissions are relatively high. Other rivals in the same category have better mileage coverage. As an added benefit, car dealers offer the Alfa Romeo 159 with an unlimited mileage warranty.

The 1750 TBi Turismo has a high running cost based on petrol consumption and an I bracket Road Tax. Depreciation is steep and has a low resale value and expensive insurance. There are 8 variants of the 159 and the 2.0 JTDm (136bhp) Lusso at £25,350 is a better choice because of its combined mpg of 55, CO2 rating of 134g/km and E tax band.
