PROS: The Alfa Romeo 159 Lusso is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine delivering a comfortable city drive, advanced safety and style at a competitively low price.
CONS: The car does not adequately deliver a smooth drive. Its handling is a little difficult on non-urban terrain, and it has a loud diesel engine and suffers from audible external noise. The car incurs expensive repairs, poor dealer service and resale values.
At 53.3 mpg the Alfa Romeo 159 Lusso can double as a sophisticated sports car with 0-62 mph in 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 136 mph. The car’s 1956cc engine delivers strong performance with 200 bhp at 5000 rpm and torque figures of 236 lb-ft at 1400 rpm.
The car operates well over most surfaces. However, its body is not tightly controlled making it difficult to drive on twisty roads. The car lacks sharp initial responses to differing terrain. The car is not as quiet as a Mercedes. In addition to loud diesel engine, external noises are audible at a reasonable level.
The Alfa Romeo Lusso has very elegant interior and exterior features. It is fitted with high-end driving and communication technology but not as much kit as the TI. The car's technology includes dual-zone climate control, four electric windows, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity, cruise control, rear end parking, folding wing mirrors, Visibility Pack and sports dials and sports suspension.
The car cabin is spacious, comfortably accommodating four tall adults in the four seats. The boot provides ample space, however, it is smaller than that of the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C-Class. In both its image and practicality, the car is more suited for the city environment and is difficult to handle in different terrain.
The Alfa Romeo 159 Lusso was awarded a 5 out of 5 by Euro NCAP. It is equipped with stability control, with front, side and curtain airbags, along with a driver’s knee bag. The car also has front-seat head restraints to minimise whiplash injuries.
The car comes with a three year warranty with unlimited miles. However, it has a poor reliability
record, with owners citing expensive repairs and poor dealer service.
The diesel engine gives the car excellent green credentials with a EURO 5 emissions rating and a carbon footprint of 139 g/km.
The Alfa Romeo 159 Lusso is priced at £25,150. It is expensive for a car which is highly sought for style and presentation and but poor in handling and expensive to maintain. With the model valued in insurance group 24 along with a Road tax band of E, the additional costs of maintaining the car are high as well. Many reviews have cited buying the car as a risky investment especially as it suffers poor re-sales and expensive repairs.
