A modified Lotus Exige has shattered the British land speed record for electric cars, after hitting a top speed of 148.7mph.

The Nemesis, originally bought on eBay, has been converted to run on battery power by green energy company Ecotricity, and can travel up to 150 miles between trips to the plug.

0-62mph takes 8.5 seconds and it is believed that the Nemesis could reach a top speed of 200mph.

The record-breaking run was completed by 21-year-old Nick Ponting at Elvington airfield near York, beating the previous record of 137mph set by Sir Malcolm Campbell's grandson Don Wales ten years ago.

Ponting was delighted at the result, saying: 'It was brilliant. The car felt really good.'

The creator of Nemesis, Dale Vince, added: 'We built the Nemesis to smash the stereotype of electric cars as something Noddy would drive -- slow, boring, not cool.'
