A heavily modified Ford GT has broken the speed record for a standing mile at the Texas Mile speed event in America with a speed of 278mph.

The GT, which is claimed to produce in the region of 2,000bhp, is the work of Texan tuning company M2K Motorsports. The car beats the previous record of 257.7mph which was set by the same car in a previous state of tune when it was in the hands of renowned US tuning company Hennessey.

Since then, the GT has been subject to even more extreme modification, giving it the power to beat its previous record.

The Texas Mile competition has been running since 2003 and takes place on an airstrip in Beeville, Texas, twice a year.
