Ferrari will gather together a world record breaking number of its cars in 2012 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Ferrari F40.
The cars will grace the Silverstone Classic between the 20 and 22 of July this year and honour the quarter-century anniversary of the F40, Ferrari’s supercar, heralded by motoring experts as one of the most outstanding showroom models ever to be produced by the Italian automotive company.
The Ferrari Owners’ Club of Great Britain is at the helm of the birthday celebrations and are organising the largest collection of F40s ever seen for the 2012 Silverstone – the world’s leading classic car racing festival.
Nigel Chiltern-Hunt, the club’s co-ordinator for this anniversary said:
“Our original aim was to get at least 25 of these Ferraris together and, as I have contacted owners, I have been gratified that so many want to be part of the celebration – so much so that we now have more than 50 F40s registered for the event with more still to come!”
The event will trump the company’s previous record of 40 F40s at the Silverstone Classic in 2007.
The last car to be commissioned by Enzo Ferrari, the brand’s eponymous founder, the F40 debuted in 1987 and acted as a testament to the car maker’s vision for track-developed, high performance supercars.
The F40 boasts a lightweight body made using carbon-fibre and other lightweight panels and is powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Its original price came in at a figure close to £300,000 (£690,000 in today's money).
“With such a rich sporting history, it’s no surprise that so many fabulous Ferraris star in many of the major races staged at the Silverstone Classic,” says Nick Wigley, an event organiser at Silverstone.
“Now the promise of a record number of Ferrari F40s lining up on the infield is another major attraction. It’s a truly mouth-watering prospect that no supercar enthusiast will want to miss.”
