The shortlist for the 2014 European Car of the Year awards has been announced.

Seven cars have made the shortlist from an initial list of 32 nominees. The award is designed to honour "the most outstanding new car to go on sale in the [last] twelve months" and is one of the most prestigious awards in motoring (although slightly less prestigious than the glittering CarSite.co.uk Car of the Year Awards).

The jury for the Car of the Year award consists of 58 members, representing 22 European countries. National representation is related to the size of the country's car market and importance in manufacturing. France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain each have six members with all other countries having proportionally fewer.

Scroll down to see the nominees. The winner will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March.
