Audi has revealed its new Sport Quattro Concept which pays tribute to the legendary Audi Quattro of the 1980s.

Although just in concept stage at the moment, it is understood that the Sport Quattro Concept -- which was first hinted at in a teaser image last week -- previews a production model which will become the flagship of the Audi range, sitting above the R8 in the firm's model line-up.

The car will go on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, thirty years since the original Sport Quattro was revealed at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Unlike the original Quattro, however, the Sport Quattro concept will be a hybrid. Under the bonnet you'll find a 552bhp petrol V8 engine with cylinder-on-demand technology mated to a 147bhp electric motor. This makes for a total power output of 690bhp and 590lb-ft of torque, making the Sport Quattro concept the most powerful Audi of all time. The power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox.

0-62mph takes just 3.7 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 189mph; however, despite the impressive performance figures, Audi claims that 113mpg and CO2 emissions of just 59g/km are on the cards. So, if this 690bhp makes it into production, it will be both free to tax and congestion charge exempt under the new c-charge restrictions. Audi also claims the car will be able to travel up to 31 miles on electric power alone.

Styling-wise, the Quattro Sport concept features a number of nods to the rally car of the '80s, including the flat, angular C-pillars and rectangular double headlights. The car also sits on 21-inch five twin-spoke alloy wheels.

On the inside, Audi has given the Sport Quattro concept a minimalist feel with all of the important information displayed on a digital instrument cluster. There's space for four inside too.
