MINI has unveiled a new one-off sports car concept at this year's Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the banks of Lake Como.
Designed in collaboration with Italian coachbuilders Touring Superleggera, the new MINI Superleggera Vision is a design study only and is not destined for production. However, with a new MINI Roadster due out next year, it's possible that the concept features some design traits we'll see on the production car in 2015.
At the front end, the Superleggera Vision is clearly inspired by the current MINI Hatch, with the same LED-ringed headlamps and grille featuring prominently. Aft of the front wheels, however, the concept is much more striking. The frameless windscreen, low-slung body, central fin and sleek rear end are all individual to the model.
Inside, the cabin is typically MINI, with a large centrally-mounted infotainment system, but with a distinctly more minimalist feel than on the production car.
Under the bonnet, the Superleggera is fitted with an electric motor, which is likely to be the same motor found in the MINI E. If it is, expect a 0-62mph time of around eight seconds and a top speed of around 100mph.
"MINI and Touring both believe that proportions are the key factor of beauty, and share the same values of essentiality and innovation," said Louis de Fabribeckers, Touring Superleggera's Head of Design.
"In this car all unnecessary equipment or decoration is sacrificed, as performance is gained through lightness and efficiency of the bodywork and interior. The Italian touch is in the proportions and the typical waistline."
