The Cayman R is sublime. It is brilliant to drive and looks sensational. It's very pricey but it wouldn't be as desirable if it wasn't. An exceptional piece of German engineering.

PROS:  The Cayman R is a superb car in almost every way. It's arguably better than a 911 and considerably cheaper.

CONS:  Porsche could have included more equipment as standard.

Behind the Wheel

The Cayman R is the fastest Cayman in the range, developing 325bhp and 273lb-ft of torque thanks to its 3.4-litre flat-six engine. This means 0-62mph takes place in a very impressive 4.9 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 173mph. In terms of outright acceleration, the Cayman is just as fast as the standard 911 Carrera. Very impressive.

This thing handles like almost nothing else. It is more balanced than a 911, thanks to its mid-engine layout, and it's sharper than a Boxster thanks to the structural rigidity offered by the tin-top roof. It is agile, responsive and surprisingly refined and comfortable for a sports car.

Looks & Equipment

The Cayman R is a beautiful car. It is unmistakably a Porsche and looks great in profile. The interior is also beautifully put together and the quality of the interior plastics is superb.

Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, air-con, electric windows, electric mirrors and CD player. Optional extras include Sat-Nav (£1986) rear parking sensors (£348), cruise control (£299) and climate control (£1040).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Cayman is fitted as standard with six airbags and stability control which should make it a very safe car indeed.

Porsche have an exemplary repuation when it comes to reliability and the Cayman is no exception. It is suppled with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty as standard which should cover you in the unlikely event that something does go wrong.

There's a decent amount of storage space in the Cayman too with 150-litres in the front and 260-litres in the rear which means that the Cayman is more practical than you'd think.

Value for Money

The Cayman R is the priciest Cayman in the range. However, at £53,731, it is still nearly £14k cheaper than the cheapest 911 and just as fast, making it exceptional value for money.

It should hold on to is value well and, managing a combined 30.4mpg, will be relatively inexpensive to run (in performance car terms). CO2 emissions of 218g/km also mean that the Cayman falls under tax bracket K which is fairly reasonable for a car of this type.
