Porsche Cayman Overview

The current Cayman comes with a choice of 3 engines ranging from a 2.7 litre to a 3.4 litre and depending on what engine you choose, the Cayman can do anything from 27 to 31 miles per gallon. All three engines do the job to a great standard meaning you shouldn’t be disappointed no matter which one you go for.

The Cayman is a unique and welcome driving experience from Porsche. Despite the fact that it was inspired by several other Porsche offerings the Cayman is a totally unique experience.

Background

The Porsche Cayman was revealed to the market in 2005 and is heavily based on the Porsche Boxter. The first model to be made available to the public was the Cayman S which was seen as a sportier version of the Cayman which was oddly not introduced until after the Cayman S in 2006. It was built on a mid engine platform, as was the Boxter with which it also shared it’s suspension, and it drew from classic Porsche models for inspiration with regards to styling. A Cayman S Sport was also put into production from 2008 before the first generation model was replaced in 2009.

The second generation Cayman arrived in 2009 with the standard models engine increased to a 2.9 litre rather that the standard 2.7 litre of its predecessor. It arrived with two variants, the Cayman and the Cayman S which are different in terms of styling, the Cayman S also has a different engine, yet both have a 10hp advantage over the Boxter.

There is also a Cayman R variant available which is much lighter than the original Cayman as it features a different body kit, no air con, no radio and no storage compartments.

Summary

Porsche has managed to take the best elements from other models and combine them into one fantastic sports car. Buyers will not be disappointed. The Cayman is easy to drive and fast, yet Porsche didn’t sacrifice comfort for performance. The Cayman represents a good blend of sports car driving experience and modern day comfort. The Cayman delivers more traditional driving dynamics and is sure to please even the most demanding driving enthusiast.
