The Porsche Cayman is a sports coupe that benefits from the years of experience of Porsche that helps it to offer a driving experience that is really something special. The car itself does come at a slight premium because of the Porsche name, but there is a good level of equipment and it isn’t as thirsty in terms of fuel efficiency as some of the other cars on the market.

PROS:  The Cayman is a car that offers a superb driving experience that is balanced and eager to please, with this smallest engine still offering excellent sports car performance.

CONS:  The dashboard isn’t the clearest or the most straightforward, and this model misses out on some of the luxuries available in the higher specification models.

Behind the Wheel

The beautifully balanced Cayman boasts the polished driving experience that you get with the majority of Porsche sports cars, and the wonderful steering will soon have you diving into the corners. The steering is full of feedback and quick to respond, while the ride is generally good, but can be a little firm, especially if you choose to opt for the 19-inch wheels. The driving position is very good and offers plenty of adjustment both for the steering wheel and the driving seat, while the visibility is also very good.

The engine performance delivered by the 2.9 litre engine is more than enough for most drivers, offering acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. The top speed of 163mph is also plenty of pace for all but the most enthusiastic of drivers. The cabin in the Cayman is also generally quite refined, with wind and road noise barely to be heard, while the roar and throb of the engine is a pleasant soundtrack.

Looks & Equipment

The Cayman is a beautiful coupe that shares many features with the Porsche Boxster, and that is no bad thing with a front end that is unmistakably a Porsche. The distinctive headlight bulges on the bonnet and the aerodynamic bonnet is wonderful, and the air intakes behind the doors are also distinctive. Inside the cabin the feel is classy and exclusive, but the dashboard is a little bit confusing at times and could be more straightforward.

The level of equipment included with this version of the Cayman isn’t the most generous, but neither does the car feel sparse. The alloy wheels are very nice, and most people will prefer the ride without the upgrade to the larger 19-inch option, and the seats have a leatherette trim. The CD stereo also has an MP3 input too.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

It is fair to say that Porsche doesn’t have a great record for making large practical cars, and the Cayman is another two seat sports car that has limited space in the boot. However, it is adequate to allow two adults to travel in comfort, and the boot isn’t as small as you would find in other sports cars. Porsche has an excellent reputation for making reliable cars, and the Cayman is likely to benefit from the same mechanical reliability and good workmanship that the rest of the Porsche range does.

The Cayman is also a very safe car, and it does have the highly advanced driver aids that help to channel the power effectively and to keep the car stable while cornering. It has a good range of airbags to make sure that if the car is involved in a collision then the driver and passenger are kept safe.

Value for Money

The price tag for this version of the Porsche Cayman is £41,165, and while some people do view this as quite expensive, others may see it as one of the most competitive ways to own a new Porsche. There are cheaper rivals on the market, but they will rarely be able to offer such a comprehensive driving experience.

Fuel efficiency from the 2.9 litre engine hasn’t been a massive priority when making the car, but it is still able to achieve a decent average 31.0mpg. The insurance group is fairly high meaning that the insurance premiums won’t be cheap, but the desirability of the car means that it has excellent resale values. The Cayman is supplied with a three year unlimited mileage warranty and roadside breakdown assistance.
