Those people who are able to see beyond the eye watering purchase price of the Turbo S cabriolet version of the 911 will see an attractive car that looks the part. However, the driving experience isn’t quite as good as the coupe with softer suspension, and the running costs mean that it isn’t much cheaper after you part with the purchase price.

PROS:  Classic 911 styling in a cabriolet that can also boast true supercar performance in a car that handles very well and also has a refined cabin for such a powerful cabrio.

CONS:  The loss of the roof does mean that the cabrio doesn’t drive as well as the coupe version of the 911, and the fabric roof does mean that it isn’t as secure as vehicles with a folding metal roof.

Behind the Wheel

The handling of the 911 has remained very good, with the steering responsive and accurate, although the soft suspension has reduced the amount of feedback. The Turbo S version does come with a suspension system offering two suspension settings, but neither is really ideal with the sportier settings being too firm for British roads and delivering every bump and pothole into the ride. The driving position is very good, and the driving seats are fully adjustable to suit the individual, with visibility also excellent.

Engine performance is truly exceptional, and the loss of the roof hasn’t cost much in terms of the speed and acceleration of the Turbo S. Acceleration from 0-62mph takes place in a sensational 3.4 seconds, with the top speed of 196mph meaning that this is a car that really is worth putting through its paces. Refinement isn’t too bad at all, with the air turbulence good even with the top down.

Looks & Equipment

The 911 has been one of the most attractive cars on the road for decades, and this Turbo S Cabriolet version is more about evolution than revolution, with the distinctive round headlights still dominating the front end. The back end is typical of the 911 with light clusters to each side of the large vent for the rear mounted engine. Inside the cabin things are classy and comfortable, with the dials being clear and easy to read, but the small switches on the centre console may take a little while to get used to.

With a car that comes with a hefty price tag like this, there are certain expectations about the equipment, and alloy wheels and leather trim are also very welcome features. Satellite navigation and a hands free phone kit are supplemented by a CD stereo which also incorporates a DVD player. Climate control and power seats also help to ensure that this car has a cabin that is comfortable and easy to adjust to suit the driver.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

When it comes to cabriolets and their practicality, most people will see that a lot of sacrifices have been made. For the 911, this isn’t really the case, as the storage is in the front and offers the same amount of space for bags as the coupe. The back seats are still fairly cramped for legroom and headroom with the hood up, but it hasn’t suffered too much. Reliability for Porsche cars is very good, and no doubt this version will continue that excellent reputation.

The cabriolet version of the 911 is still a safe car, with plenty of driving aids to help channel the power from the engine safely and reliably to the wheels. It also comes with a good range of airbags to look after the occupants in an accident.

Value for Money

The purchase price for the Turbo S Cabriolet is a rather hefty £133,553, and those who are looking for a soft top Porsche on a budget may want to look further down the 911 cabrio range, or may even want to consider the Boxster.

Running costs for the Turbo S are also significant, with the car reaching the top insurance group meaning that premiums will also be expensive. The car can deliver an average 25.7mpg in terms of the fuel performance, but resale values are quite good, which is a plus point for the 911. The car is delivered with a three year warranty and roadside breakdown assistance.
