The current Porsche 911 (known as the 991 series) offers the choice of a number of engines ranging from a 3.6 litre to a 4.0 litre, depending on which engine you choose, the 911 is capable of 20-29 miles per gallon.

The Porsche 911 has been around for a long time. The 911 has been an important model for many Porsche’s to follow. The 911 has provided an affordable supercar and has become a very familiar name within this sector of the market.

Background

The Porsche 911 comes under the category of a GT Coupe supercar; all words which arouse the passions of any car enthusiast. It was first produced in 1963 and is well known for being a rear engine car.

The first breed of the 911, the 911 Classic, was designed to replace the Porsche 356 and it’s safe to say that the 911 went much further than simply replacing the 356. Three years after its initial production, Porsche revealed a new and more powerful 911, the 911S. The new 911S increased the engines power from 130 PS to 160 PS. An open roof Targa variant was also introduced in 1967. The first generation 911 was continually touched up and improved right up until the 911 Carrera RS was introduced in 1973.

The 911 Carrera RS had a bigger engine than the 911S and was produced with racing in mind. It also went through a number of changes and updates until it was replaced by the 1975 Turbo model which was known as the Porsche 930. The 911 continued to see new variants and models with all models before 1998 containing Air-cooled engines.

In 1998 the Porsche 996 was produced, which was the first of the 911 series to have a water cooled engine. It also saw change in the 911s famous design, making it look a lot similar to the less expensive Boxter. There were many variants of the 996 made available, such as all-wheel drive models; the Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S as well as racing and Turbo variants.

The 997 series 911 took over in 2005 and was made to be a very different car to the 996 in an attempt to return to the 911s roots, for a start the bug eye style headlights were brought back to make it look more like the original air-cooled 911s. Since the 997 arrived numerous variant have been introduced including the 997 turbo, the 997 GT3, the 997 GT3 RS, and the 997 GT2.

The 997 was replaced by the current 991 Series in 2011. The 991 has a brand new platform which is a big deal for the 911 as every 911 before it has been built on the same two platforms. It is larger but lighter than its predecessor due to its largely aluminium build, making it capable of faster speeds, with all 997 models able to achieve 60 mph in under 5 seconds.

Summary

The 911 will be an expensive car to buy and own. Insurance rates will be high and fuel economy will not be good. It is however an exceptional car that will never disappoint, its performance is splendid and the engine sounds phenomenal. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a Porsche 911 you should buy one, for you’re not just buying a car, you’re buying a legacy.
