The Peugeot 107 is a car that is designed to be small and inexpensive to run, and it does deliver a reasonable dose of practicality to go with this too. Anyone buying a small car will be aware that there is a trade-off with the size and space available, but the lack of performance once you get out of town means that it will often be left struggling and a little out of its depth.

PROS:  The smallest of Peugeot's cars is well designed and has a bold style, and with a reliable small engine it also proves itself to be a practical and cheap car to drive around town.

CONS:  The ride is a little too stiff with a suspension that is bouncy, with a little too much noise when leaving the car's natural urban habitat.

Behind the Wheel

The small size of the 107 is certainly a benefit when it comes to driving in urban areas, but one of the problems is that it does feel a little heavy to start with when turning the wheel. The handling and grip is fine, and going into corners the 107 is confident enough, although it is fair to say that the hard ride will not be to everybody's taste. The driving position is not as adjustable as it is in some other cars, with a lack of seat height and steering wheel reach adjustment meaning that some drivers may struggle to get a comfortable position.

One of the problems with a small engine that delivers good fuel efficiency is that it doesn't perform particularly well, and the acceleration from 0-62mph is a rather ponderous 14.2 seconds. The top speed of 100mph is something that most 107's will rarely approach, as there can be plenty of wind noise and the engine may be reluctant to work that hard.

Looks & Equipment

There is no doubt that the 107 shares many traits with the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo, because the cars are produced in the same factory in the Czech Republic. However, the large air intake with a chrome divider and rounded lights and bonnet give the car a cool look. The back end is tidy, and the bubbly tail lights mean that it is still a rather interesting looking car. On the inside the large prominent dials are clear and easy to read, with body coloured metalwork providing a continuity from the external style.

In terms of the equipment that has been provided by the 107, the Urban level of trim is fairly good for such a small car, but many will still say that it is a little frugal. A CD player with an MP3 socket is as advanced as the entertainment gets, and it is also supplied with electric windows, air conditioning, and electric windows.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The 107 is a very small car, and one of the biggest problems is the lack of space, with the rear seats and the boot being particularly stingy. However, this is to be expected with a car of this size, and most people will find that the rear seats are too impractical for carrying many passengers. The front seats do offer plenty of space, and the handling of the car means it is ideal for urban use.

The car has been given a four star safety rating in the Euro NCAP safety tests, and this is lower than in many other cars, mainly because of the small size and that it only has four airbags. Although Peugeot don't have a long history of reliable cars, there are no problems known with the 107.

Value for Money

This version of the Peugeot 107 has a list price of £7,995, which is very competitive for a car of this size, but not quite the cheapest on the market. With the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo built in the same factory, these are the natural competition for the 107.

One of the great aspects of the 107 is that it does have an excellent frugality when it comes to the fuel efficiency, able to deliver an average 65.7mpg. The insurance group is one of the lowest available, and there will always be a good market from young people looking for first cars just like the 107, meaning resale values should be quite strong. The car is supplied with a three year warranty and a one year breakdown assistance policy.
