The Accord Tourer 2.2 i-DTEC EX 5dr is a great car which offers superb fuel efficiency, good looks, practicality and low running costs. However, the Honda is about as exciting as a pair of beige trousers and you can get a 3 Series Touring for this sort of money.

PROS:  Exemplary build quality, comfortable, good fuel efficiency

CONS:  Dull, dull and dull

Behind the Wheel

The 2.2-litre diesel unit under the Accord's bonnet delivers 148bhp and 258lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 10.1 seconds and a top speed of 128mph. This is fairly impressive for a large estate car and means that the Accord makes good progress on the open road.

The Accord Tourer handles well and feels stable through the corners, with very little body roll. The steering is a bit woolen and offers very little in the way of feedback but that is not to say that the Accord is bad to drive, just dull.

Looks & Equipment

The Accord Tourer is a very good looking car and the interior feels luxurious thanks to leather seats which come as standard.

Standard features include climate control, electric door mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, electric sunroof, CD player with MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, Sat-nav and rear parking sensors.

Alloy wheels also come as standard and help to enliven the Accord Tourer's profile and metallic paint is available as an optional extra, costing £490.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

This car provides a great amount of boot space with 406 litres available when the seats are upright, and a massive 1183 litres of free space when the rear seats are folded down.

The Accord scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and should be a very safe vehicle thanks to a suite of airbags and a host of driver aids which keep all four wheels firmly planted on the road.

Central locking is fitted within the car to improve driver convenience, as having to manually lock the car can be a nuisance. An alarm also comes as standard.

The Accord Tourer should be very reliable and comes with a 3 year/90,000 mile warranty which is better than the 60,000 mile warranty typically offered by most manufacurers.

Value for Money

The Accord Tourer 2.2 i-DTEC EX 5dr is priced at £28,355 which, although not expensive in the grand scheme of things, puts the car in direct competition with the BMW 3 Series Touring. Up against the BMW, the Accord really doesn't stand a chance.

On the plus side, the Accord's diesel engine provides some impressive economy figures - you should get 50.4mpg on the combined cycle and low CO2 emissions of 146g/km put the Accord into VED band F. Group 25 insurance is also very reasonable and means that the Accord will be cheap to run.
