The Honda Accord 2.0 i-VTEC ES is an excellent all-rounder and a viable alternative to the European opposition. However, it's a little bit pricey for what it is, and it lacks desirability thanks to its forgettable styling and mainstream badge.

PROS:  The Accord has a silky smooth petrol engine and the quality of its interior is top-notch. It's also very spacious and should prove endlessly reliable.

CONS:  The dashboard is a little confusing and many of the Accord's rivals are more fun to drive.

Behind the Wheel

The Accord's 2.0-litre petrol engine is very good indeed and provides more than enough get-up-and-go for a car of this size. It develops 154bhp and 141lb-ft of torque which translates into a 0-62mph time of 9.4 seconds and a top speed of 133mph.

The Accord is a very comfortable car to drive long distances thanks to its soft suspension. It's also perfectly competent when the road gets twisty but it offers the driver no sense of excitement.

The Accord is very quiet thanks to its smooth petrol engine and there is very little road or wind noise, even at higher speeds.

Looks & Equipment

The Accord is a handsome looking car, if a little bland. The interior is also very stylish although some of the interior plastics feel a little low-rent. The dashboard is also a bit daunting thanks to a confusing array of switches and buttons.

This is the entry-level Accord and comes as standard with climate control, cruise control, electric and heated mirrors, front and rear electric windows, MP3 connectivity and a CD player. Metallic paint can be specified for a further £490.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Accord is fairly spacious on the inside with plenty of room for both front and rear passengers and a good amount of boot space (467-litres). However, the lack of a hatchback model in the range is a downside.

Safety should not be an issue as the Accord scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is fitted with six airbags, ani-whiplash head restraints and stability control.

Honda have a legendary reputation for reliability and the Accord was the highest ranked car in its class in the 2011 J D Power Survey. Honda provide a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty on all their cars.

Value for Money

Priced at £21,705, the Accord undercuts the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, but it’s more expensive than the VW Passat and Ford Mondeo. Due to the brand’s track record in reliability, resale values should be very strong.

It should also be relatively cheap to run, returning a combined 40.9mpg and emitting 159g/km of CO2, placing it under VED band G. Group 23 insurance is pretty average for a car of this type.
