Honda Accord Overview

As well as excellent build quality, the Accord boasts high levels of refinement and delivers a fun and exciting driving experience. The body style of the current model has been improved, and the car sports a new grille. There have also been some significant engineering improvements, and a diesel variant is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Honda Accord is an excellent motorway cruiser, while good suspension and comfortable seats enhance the ride quality. Inside the car is a spacious cabin with decent head and legroom for all passengers. The boot is not as large as that of some rivals, but provides adequate space for the average family’s needs.

The Accord comes with good standard equipment, with optional extras such as Bluetooth, automatic lights and automatic window wipers. Also favourable is the range of engines available, with the impressive 2.2 litre diesel offering the best fuel economy.

Background

The Honda Accord was released in 1976 as a 3-door hatchback, popular for its excellent fuel economy and high level of standard features. A 4-door saloon model was added to the line-up in 1977, with an upgraded engine, and the model was given a facelift in 1980.

The second generation Accord, produced between 1981 and 1985, sported a restyled body shape and a more modernised interior. The automatic transmission was upgraded to 4-speed in 1983, and the model was refreshed in 1984.

The Honda Accord entered its third generation in 1986, with a modified exterior, and was available as a 2-door coupe from 1988.

A 5-door estate variant was introduced to the line-up for the fourth generation Accord (Honda Accord Tourer), which debuted in 1990 and boasted significant engineering design improvements. The fifth generation saw the launch of two models – one for Europe and one for North America. The European car was a 4-door saloon (Honda Accord Saloon) with improved exterior styling.

The sixth generation was now also available as a 5-door hatchback in Europe from 1998, as was the seventh generation.

The current Honda Accord has been in production since 2008 and features many more technological innovations than its predecessor along with improved performance (Honda Accord Type S).

Summary

The Honda Accord is a stylish family car that delivers a fun driving experience and an excellent motorway cruise. It is reliable, durable and comfortable.
