REVIEW
List Price: £12,225
Tax Band: B
Insurance Group: N/A
MPG: 68.9
CO2: 109
0-62 Mph: 13.6 secs
BHP: 74 BHP
Range: 530 miles
CarSite Verdict:  2.75/5
The Ka Metal 1.3 TDCi is extremely fuel efficient and offers a decent, if not comprehensive, level of standard equipment. However at this price you could get a decent mid-range Fiesta and this is likely to tempt buyers into the bigger Ford.

PROS:  This Ford Ka is particularly friendly to the environment, producing CO2 emissions of just 109g/km. This makes for very low running costs.

CONS:  £12k is expensive for a Ka. Despite this being the top-of-the-line model, features such as front side airbags and rear parking sensors are only available at an additional cost.

Behind the Wheel

The engine produces 74bhp which gives it fairly mediocre performance credentials. The car is particularly slow to accelerate, getting from 0-62 mph in a fairly lengthy 13.6 seconds. The top speed of 99mph is fairly adequate for a car of this type.

In terms of refinement, the engine is not overly loud but unfortunately the cabin fails to block out wind and road noise, making it a reasonably noisy car to drive. The car doesn't handle as well as the previous generation Ka either.

Looks & Equipment

Although the Ka is good looking, it has none of the charm and originality of its predecessor and looks a bit bland.

The Ka Metal 1.3 TDCi has central locking, air-con, alloy wheels, electric windows, electric door mirrors and a CD player as standard.

Optional extras include MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth (£250 for the pair), rear parking sensors (£200), metallic paint (£445) and stability control (£335). Leather seats, cruise control and sat-nav are unavailable altogether.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Driver and passenger airbags are fitted as standard but you'll have to fork out another £250 for front side airbags.

The car is not ideal for long trips as the driving position can be uncomfortable as there is limited adjustment in the seat.

Alongside this limited comfort and practicality, the Ka also falls short on storage space. The car only offers 224 litres of space when the seats are up, increasing to 747 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

In terms of reliability, Ford are known for producing reliable cars. However, the Ka was developed in conjunction with Fiat and Fiat is not known for making reliable cars. The car does come with a three year warranty for 60,000 miles which should put drivers' minds at rest.

Value for Money

At £12,045, the Ka is very expensive and for the money you could have a decent mid-range Fiesta or a Fiat 500. Although Fords always retain their value quite well, the 500 will offer stronger residuals which will save you money if you don't intend to own the car long.

The Ka Metal 1.3 TDCi is particularly efficient with CO2 emissions registering at a lowly 109g/km - placing it under one of the cheapest road tax bands, B. With fuel consumption of 68.9mpg on the combined cycle, running costs are extremely low making it a fuel efficient vehicle that is likely to be very attractive to drivers that are likely to use it on a regular basis.
