CarSite Verdict:  3/5
This model is relatively basic in terms of technological equipment but its safety features are well established. The car's running and maintenance costs are average as is its fuel economy; insurance group and road tax band are mid-range. Therefore, this car will not cost fortunes to run, but equally it is not the most cost-effective small family car on the market.

PROS:  This 5 door small family car is roomy and comfortably seats a family of five. It was also awarded the maximum five-star rating by NCAP, which suggests this is a good family car choice.

CONS:  The CO2 emissions produced by this car are not beneficial to the environment by any means and the cars road tax is expensive as a result. Air conditioning, leather seating, cruise control and an alarm are not available with this model.

Behind the Wheel

106 mph is the top speed that this car can reach, which is typical of a small family car. It is slow off the mark as it takes this car 12.3 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph but this is expected from a car such as this. The car’s power output is quite weak at 99 bhp, and the cars torque is equally small at 96 lb-ft.

Unfortunately, noise refinement of the engines is low as they need to be pushed hard in order to achieve results. This means there is some disturbance experienced within the cabin, limiting the smoothness of the drive. The dimensions of the car should make it agile on the road but heavy steering impairs this and body lean is also noticeable. However, the suspension does do a good job of eliminating the effect of bumps and imperfections in the road.

Looks & Equipment

Offering climate control instead of air conditioning, this model offers a good range of basic features to buyers. Other standard equipment which is fitted includes basics such as electric door mirrors and electric front windows as well as luxuries such as MP3 connectivity for the stereo system

Those wanting to enhance the overall appearance of the car can invest in a metallic paint finish for the exterior but this will cost and extra £375 ontop of the purchase price. Alloy wheels are fitted as standard however and the metallic finish could really complement this look.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Chevrolet provide a favourable 5 year warranty for up to 100,000 miles.

Practicality levels are also high and the car offers ample space for passengers and drivers. Comfort levels are high thanks to the suspension although, as stated, noise infiltration can be a bit of a problem. The car seats five occupants comfortably and the five door access is more convenient for families. The boot also offers sufficient storage space for a car of this kind with 220 litres of space on offer when the seats are all in position. Folding the rear seats down expand this to a more than generous 980 litres.

Safety levels are also high and the car comes fitted with a number of security systems and features designed to protect the car and its occupants. These include driver, passenger and front side airbags as well as an alarm and central locking.

Value for Money

The Chevrolet Aveo 1.4 LT Auto 5dr is available from £12,835 and considering this car does not come with a range of great facilities this is a lot to pay.

The car's fuel efficiency is also not especially impressive at 42.1 mpg so drivers will not be rewarded with exceptionally low running and maintenance costs either. Carbon emissions of 158 g/km are also fairly high, giving the car poor green credentials and relatively high road tax costs under tax band G, whilst insurance premiums fall under bracket 16 making them fairly mid-range.

Its high saftey levels, which achieved the top five star rating in the NCAP crash tests, and strong reliability and practicality are great features but overall the car could perform better within its class.
