A superbly responsive engine, good ride and sure handling all packaged in Alfa’s unmistakeable Italian style makes the Alfa Romeo 1.4 TB MultiAir 105bhp Sprint 3-door a class beating car; a potent blend of performance, economy and style that’ll turn heads.

PROS:  Its compact size, fun drive, strong performing turbocharged petrol engine and distinctive Italian styling make it an excellent choice.

CONS:  Firm ride, awkward high boot sill, and the fact that it doesn’t drive as well as a MINI.

Behind the Wheel

First impressions are pleasing with the metallic looking dash and some sporty looking instruments giving it a solid and expensive feel, even though some critics say it was styled after the Fiat Grande Punto. Easy adjustments to the driver’s seat give a nice high driving position offering good visibility.

Space may be a problem for some, especially in the rear, where legroom is limited and may make a long drive uncomfortable for some. Rear visibility isn’t so good because of the rear pillar design, but the larger than normal door mirrors compensate somewhat.

Ride quality is generally good, although there are mixed opinions on the overall driving experience; with praise for a fun and comfortable drive from some, and others who criticise its steering for lacking precision and think the ride is way too firm for a car in this class.

Its 4 cylinder, 16valve, petrol engine churns out an impressive 105bhp and 96lbs-ft torque coupled with the 6 speed transmission it has a top speed of 116mph, and whisks you to 62mph in only 10.7 seconds, which is impressive. The same engine returns a frugal 49.6 mpg on average, making it one of the best in this class. The MultiAir engine is smooth and quieter than the diesel options available. While wind and road noise are evident at high speed, at low speed it’s the suspension that you’ll notice.

Overall it’s pretty nippy and powerful compared to many of its rivals such as the equivalent Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa, and provides a good balance of performance with economy.

Looks & Equipment

Distinctive Italian styling makes it an eye-catcher, especially if you opt for it in Red. Standard equipment includes: alloys wheels, power steering, central locking, ABS brakes, all round airbags, electric windows, electric mirrors, air conditioning, a CD system plus MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) stability control, alarm and immobiliser.

If that’s not enough, you can always add the Sport trim pack in the way of the the Quadrifoglio Verde which comes with variable damping suspension and makes it the best of the versions available. Also available as extra are: Satellite navigation at £900.00, metallic paint at £425.00, rear parking sensors at £200.00, leather seats at £1.000 and climate control for £300.00.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The boot offers 270 litres of space, which is on a par with most super-minis but the rear sill can cause some problems when loading heavy objects.

While adjustable seats in the front allow the driver and passenger to get comfortable, the rear seats can feel a bit cramped for some passengers, although it claims to be a 5-seater.

Euro NCAP ratings are: 5 for passengers, 3 for children and 2 for pedestrians.

All round air-bags, and anti whiplash head restraints contribute to the maximum overall Euro NCAP rating of 5.

Alfa Romeo are famed for their engines, design, and styling more than for reliability, but the 1.4 TB MultiAir comes with their normal 3 year unlimited mileage warranty, and 18000 mile service intervals.

Value for Money

Listed at £13,955 it’s by no means cheap, but it does deliver more than a lot of other super-minis in terms of driving experience and styling, not to mention the good resale value. It’s still economical in spite of its performance ability, with an average of 49,6mpg, making it one of the most economical in its class.

C02 emissions are 134 g/km (EU5) and it falls in Road Tax Band E, which will cost you £1,232 for the first year and then £110.00 thereafter. Insurance category is 13.

While it’s not as expensive as a MINI, which offers a better ride, it does deliver better performance, economy, and lower C02 emissions than the Ford Fiesta 1.4L equivalent and good resale values are predicted; more than for some of its competitors such as the Fiesta or Citroen.
For a blend of performance, economy and looks, the Alfa Romeo 1.4 TB MultiAir, 105bhp Sprint 3-door is up there with the best.
