Volkswagen has unveiled a pre-production version of the new Golf BlueMotion at the Paris Motor Show.
The third-generation Golf BlueMotion is due to launch in the UK next summer and is predicted to return 88.3mpg and just 85g/km of CO2.
The BlueMotion is fitted with a 1.6-litre, 109bhp diesel engine and a small 50-litre fuel tank which, theoretically, gives the Golf a 970-mile range.
VW has gone to great lengths to strip weight from the BlueMotion and has taken 26kg out of the running gear and 37kg out of the body. In addition to this, the BlueMotion uses very tall gearing to help maximise fuel economy, and VW has cut the Golf's drag coefficient by 10%, lowering it to a very slippery 0.27.
Low rolling resistance tyres, a special front grille and aerodynamic under-floor panels also help to keep the BlueMotion's fuel consumption as low as possible.
The first-gen BlueMotion Golf made its debut five years ago and returned 62.8mpg and 119g/km of CO2. VW improved upon this in 2009 with the second-gen model, which managed 74.3mpg and 99g/km CO2.
