Volkswagen has unveiled a new estate version of its sporty Golf R, a specification which was introduced in hatchback form earlier this year.
The new model was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and is the first time an estate version of the Golf R has been produced by Volkswagen. UK order books for the model are expected to open in Spring 2015, in readiness for deliveries to begin in the summer.
It shares the 296bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine which powers the Golf R hatchback, along with a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive both as standard. A sport suspension, lowered by 20mm, is also a standard feature, while an adaptive chassis control system can be included as an optional extra. The result is an estate car capable of reaching 0-62mph in just 5.1 seconds, while still offering a combined 40.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 163g/km.
The Golf R estate boasts 605 litres of boot space, rising to 1,620 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The estate bodyshell shares the same styling as the hatchback up to the B-pillars, but is distinguished from the rest of the Volkswagen Golf estate models by a new R design bumper, high-gloss black diffuser, chrome-plated tailpipe trims, LED number plate lights, bi-xenon headlights, daytime running lights, body-coloured side sill panels, matt chrome door mirror caps, black painted brake callipers, and assorted R logos. The 18-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels are exclusive to Golf R models, while lightweight flow-formed 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ alloys are an optional extra. Inside the cabin is R-branded Alcantara trim.
