The new flagship Volkswagen Arteon has gone on UK sale priced from £34,305 on-the-road.
A fastback-styled five-door gran tourer, the generously-proportioned Arteon sits above the Passat in Volkswagen’s revised line-up. It is 4,862mm long, 1,871mm wide, and 1,450mm high, allowing for a cabin that offers class-leading leg room and 563 litres of luggage space, rising to 1,557 litres once the rear seats are folded.
At launch, the Arteon range features three turbo charged direct injection engines – 276bhp 2.0-litre TSI petrol, a 236bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel, and a 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel – with further power units to be added in due course. An automated DSG dual clutch seven-speed gearbox comes as standard, while the more powerful 276bhp and 236bhp engines also get Volkswagen 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
The Arteon will go from 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds in its most powerful 276bhp petrol guise, while the most efficient option is the 148bhp diesel with fuel economy of 62.8 mpg.
The Arteon’s Volkswagen MQB platform includes a high body rigidity shell resulting from the use of ultra high-strength and hot-stamped steels. It boasts a full 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with active bonnet technology that protects not only passengers but pedestrians too. Designed to reduce head trauma, the active bonnet system increases the gap between the hard engine block and the flexible bonnet, working at speeds ranging from 15mph to 34mph.
The Volkswagen Arteon is offered in two trim levels; luxury Elegance or sporty R-Line. Standard equipment includes the latest Discover Navigation system with eight-inch colour touchscreen, eight-speaker sound system, Bluetooth audio and telephone connectivity, Volkswagen Media Control which allows remote control of the infotainment system via compatible smartphone or tablet device, a 12.3-inch Active Info Display, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED self-levelling headlights, LED tinted rear light clusters with dynamic indicators, Nappa leather upholstery, Car-Net connectivity, and Air Care Climatronic 3Zone electronic air conditioning with automatic air recirculation.
Standard assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control with predictive cruise control, City Emergency Braking, Front Assist, Speed Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Assist, and Driver Alert fatigue warning system. The Arteon also boasts premium options such as a head-up display, and Volkswagen’s Discover Pro infotainment system featuring a 9.2-inch glass screen and gesture control. Other optional equipment includes panoramic roof, front massaging seats, steering wheel heating, Dynaudio ‘Confidence’ sound pack featuring a 16-channel digital amplifier, 700-watt output and 11 speakers, plus subwoofer; and up to 20-inch alloy wheels.
The new Arteon is in showrooms now at Volkswagen retailers.
