Volvo Cars have this week launched both their new S60 mid-size premium sports saloon and their new United States manufacturing plant in South Carolina.
The Charleston plant was an apt setting for the S60’s launch, as the new model will be the first Volvo to be built in the US, as well as being the first Volvo car sold without a diesel option.
The lack of a diesel option follows on from Volvo’s announcement last year that all new models launched from 2019 onwards will be electrified. The new S60 will come with a choice of two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines. The T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid boasts a combined 340bhp, while the award-winning T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid delivers up to 400bhp. In addition, Volvo’s proven T5 and T6 petrol engines will be available on the S60 in selected markets. Built on the same platform as the recently-launched V60, the new S60 also shares the same safety technology and infotainment systems. This includes City Safety with Autobrake, which is unique in detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals to avoid collisions. The S60 also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering-assistance systems, as well as the option of Pilot Assist and Cross Traffic Alert with Autobrake.
Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance division, have also produced a performance handling upgrade for the S60 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid version. Called Polestar Engineered, the package adds upgraded wheels, brakes, suspension, and an engine control unit which boosts output to 415bhp.
The new S60 will also be available via Volvo Cars’ innovative premium subscription service, Care by Volvo, which offers car access through a monthly flat-fee subscription with no down payment.
