In an industry first, Volvo has begun exporting Chinese-built cars to Europe via train.
The Volvo S90 premium saloons have left Volvo’s Daqing plant and are due to arrive in the Belgian town of Zeebrugge this week.
Using rail reduces transport time be two-thirds compared to shipping, as well as reducing CO2 emissions.
Each train will haul around 120 Volvos housed in specially-designed containers, with an initial schedule of one train per week.
China’s Prime Minister, Li Keqiang, is visiting Belgium today (31 May 2017) to coincide with the first delivery, where he is set to meet Volvo Cars’ chairman Li Shufu and CEO Håkan Samuelsson.
