This is the new Volvo Concept Estate, the third in a series of three concepts which preview the next Volvo XC90, which is due out later this year.
Set to make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week, the Concept Estate follows on from the Concept Coupe and the Concept XC Coupe, which were revealed at the Frankfurt and Detroit motor shows, respectively.
The big news is that the Concept Estate has a strikingly simple interior, eschewing the traditional selection of buttons and controls in favour of a large tablet-like touch screen panel in the centre console.
"The basic idea is to organise controls and information in a perfectly intuitive and user-friendly way. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, making the drive more enjoyable, efficient and safe," said Volvo boss Thomas Ingenlath.
Volvo admits the Concept Estate has been designed to pay tribute to the legendary Volvo 1800 ES of the 1970s.
"The 1800-models are iconic Volvos, renowned for their beautiful forms and detailing," said Ingenlath. "However, using elements from their exterior and interior has nothing to do with being retro. We are using these subtle links to a glorious past to create a future in which sheer beauty becomes a recognised part of Volvo's identity."
The concept is based on Volvo's SPA platform and is powered by one of Volvo's efficient Drive-E engines.
The Geneva Motor Show begins next week.
