Volvo are launching an armoured version of their XC90 SUV, aimed at high-profile individuals in need of a high-level of personal protection or simply those with a particularly challenging school run.
The Swedish brand has eight decades of experience in building specialist vehicles, and is producing the armoured XC90 after receiving what it describes as numerous requests from customers in recent years.
Armoured vehicles are a fast-growing market, and the Volvo XC90 Armoured enters it with an impressive VPAM VR8 protection rating, meaning it has a 360-degree ballistic and explosive resistance.
Stephan Green, Marketing Director at Volvo Cars Special Vehicles, explained, “The XC90 Armoured with VR8 protection rating enables us to offer a car that provides a high level of protection while retaining the car’s fundamental properties. Potential customers include security services who would use the car to transport high-profile individuals.”
Based on the Inscription version of the Volvo XC90 T6 AWD, the manufacturer will not disclose full details of the production process, but can confirm the model boasts 10mm high-strength steel armour and glass up to 50mm thick. With around 1,400kg added to the XC90’s weight, uprated suspension and new brakes are also included.
A slightly lighter version, based on either the XC60 T6 AWD Inscription and XC90 T6 AWD Inscription, is also available aimed at those experiencing a heightened personal threat including the police, diplomatic services, or private individuals.
Volvo are already taking orders for their range of armoured cars, with prices available on enquiry.
