Volkswagen have announced the gradual restart of production in Europe.

Production will resume this week at the Volkswagen plants in the Slovakian capital Bratislava and at Zwickau in the eastern part of Germany.  This will be followed by the company’s factories in Portugal, Spain, Russia, and the United States the following week, and then South Africa, South America, and Mexico during May.

The return to full scale production will be gradual, with a phased return for production plant staff via short-time working, and will be dictated by parts availability, government requirements, and the development of sales markets. Last week saw production resume at two of the Volkswagen Group Components’ German plants, with three more German sites and one in Poland coming back on line during this week.

“Volkswagen has prepared intensively for these steps over the past three weeks”, explained the Chief Operating Officer Ralf Brandstatter.

He added, “In addition to developing a comprehensive catalogue of measures for the protection of our employees’ health, we have also forged ahead with the re- establishment of our supply chains.”
