Volkswagen has ended production of its Scirocco R, ahead of the launch of a facelifted Scirocco at the Geneva Motor Show.

The reason for the slightly premature death of the R seems to be that, with the new Mk7 Golf R now in production, production of the old EA113 2.0-litre engine which was fitted to both the Scirocco R and the old Golf R has ended, leaving the Scirocco R with nothing under the bonnet.

Although no details on the new Scirocco R have been released, it has been speculated that the new model will be powered by the same ES888 engine which powers both the new Golf GTI and R, producing around 300bhp.

The new, facelifted Scirocco will make its debut in Geneva in March; however, it remains to be seen when the Scirocco R will go on sale. We'll bring you more information as and when it becomes available.
