At the North American International Auto Show this year Volkswagen has unveiled a new electric concept version of its iconic Beetle - the E-Bugster.

The new E-Bugster concept car unveiled by Volkswagen at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week continues the sporty theme of the latest Beetle, but with an 85kWh electric motor. This is able to accelerate the E-Bugster from 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds. The 28.3 kWh litium-ion batteries offer a driving range of 110 miles, and have a fast-charging function which allows them to fully recharge in 35 minutes

In addition to plug-in charging, the E-Bugster is also able to replenish its batteries in other ways. When the driver's foot is taken off the accelerator, pedal kinetic energy is transformed into electricity and stored in the battery. Energy is also recovered when the brakes are applied.

The new concept car is the same length as a regular Beetle, but is 30mm wider, while the roof has been lowered by 90mm. It features a wide rear window, and a swept-back front windscreen. The bumpers on both front and back have been redesigned, and LED daytime running lights at the front of the car on the outer edges of the central air intake form semi-circular shapes. Other design features include flared wheel arches, 20-inch alloy wheels and a chrome strip running around the bottom edge of the side windows.
