The first images of the new Volkswagen Golf GTi have been leaked online, ahead of its scheduled debut at the Paris Motor Show.
Volkswagen is planning to unveil the new Mk7 Golf alongside a concept version of the new GTi, and although the concept is still in the design stages, the production model is expected to remain largely unchanged.
From the first glance, the GTi bloodline is apparent in the new model. The red strip across the front grille, the tartan seats and the red brake callipers all hint that this is no ordinary VW Golf. The GTi also comes with twin tailpipes, a diffuser, big alloy wheels and black trim on the front bumper.
Volkswagen has yet to reveal any official details on the new GTi, but rumours suggest a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot engine with 217bhp is in the offing. An optional performance upgrade package, which will provide a 10bhp boost, is also rumoured.
A 0-62mph time of around 6.5 seconds seems likely and, thanks to the weight-saving efforts of VW's engineers, a combined fuel economy figure of 42.8mpg is expected.
The GTi is expected to come with a choice of six-speed manual or double-clutch automatic gearboxes.
More details will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show, and the standard Mk7 Golf goes on sale in January 2013.
