Volkswagen say they have forged a perfect mix of hybrid technology and GTI dynamics to produce the latest, greenest Golf.
The German manufacturer will begin to take orders today on their new model and the first deliveries are expected in March. The GTE will be unlike other electric models in that it will be sold in all Volkswagen dealers as opposed to just in specific e-Retailers; it will cost £28,035 taking into account the government’s plug-in car grant of £5,000.
The new GTE was given its name in an attempt to align it with the famous GTI and GTD models, reflecting the manufacturer’s confidence in its performance abilities. It will have two engines: a 1.4 litre 150 PS TSI direct injection petrol engine and a 102 PS electric motor which Volkswagen say will produce a combined power of 204 PS and will give a arrange of 580 miles.
In electric mode, the GTE is capable of reaching 81 mph and with the TSI section engaged, up to 138 mph. Combined acceleration will give 0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds and combined efficiency will be as high as 166 mpg with 39 g/km of CO2 produced. In light of its green credentials, it is expected to be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty and the London Congestion Charge.
