The all-new Volkswagen e-load up!, an electric delivery van based on the company's up! city car, has made its debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although quite a lot smaller than most commercial vehicles, Volkswagen claims that the e-load up! could find favour with service technicians, couriers and pizza delivery drivers, offering 1,400-litres of space in the back.

The idea behind the e-load up! is that a small van is a more efficient way of carrying small loads. Volkswagen points out that the best size for a commercial vehicle is "the right size for the job" and that a larger van would less appropriate for the job of carrying small loads than the diminutive e-load up!.

The e-load up! shares its electric powertrain with the conventional e-up! city car and gets an 81bhp electric motor which is capable of propelling the car to a top speed of 80mph. Volkswagen also claims that the e-load up! will have an electric range of 99 miles.

There's no word yet on whether the e-load up! will reach production; however, Volkswagen has announced that it will consider making the van if there is a sufficient level of demand.
