Vauxhall will use the Frankfurt Motor Show to unveil its new Monza concept, a show car which not only previews Vauxhall's latest styling direction but also marks the return of one of the most evocative nameplates in the company's history.
Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 guide
The teaser images released by Vauxhall feature Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann standing next to the new car and show that the Monza will be given a low and wide stance with a striking and angular front end design.
A number of Opel's hallmark design features are included in the design, such as the bonnet crease and the chrome grille bar which carries the firm's badge.
However, it's not just the Monza's styling that is revolutionary. Underneath, the Monza is fitted with what Vauxhall calls a "ground-breaking powertrain solution". The company also claims that the car "offers trailblazing possibilities that are a quantum leap in the development of infotainment systems".
It has been more than fifteen years since Vauxhall last marketed a big coupe, the Calibra. And although the Monza looks to be a rival for cars such as the Audi A5 and the upcoming BMW 4 Series, Vauxhall claims that the car is purely a showcase and that it has no plans to put it into production.
It's also a welcome return for the Monza nameplate which was last used in the UK in 1986 on the Vauxhall Senator-based Opel Monza coupe. Vauxhall claims that the new car pays homage to the old model through shared design elements such as the low belt line and large glasshouse.
