New car sales were up again last month, with 157,314 cars finding homes in October, a four per cent rise over the same period in 2012.
As a result of October's strong sales, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has raised its forecast of annual new car sales from 2.22 million to 2.25 million units for 2013 -- the highest number in six years.
Private sales continue to grow, with a 4.5 per cent increase in October, while business sales are consistent with the same time last year.
The Ford Fiesta remains Britain's biggest-selling car, followed by the Focus, the Vauxhall Corsa, the Astra, the VW Golf, the Nissan Qashqai, the BMW 3 Series, BMW 1 Series, VW Polo and Peugeot 208.
"With October new car registrations up we have now seen 20 consecutive months of growth," said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive.
"These sustained rises have been driven by robust private demand, a trend that has given us the confidence to raise our year-end forecast to 2.25 million units -- 10 per cent ahead of last year. Looking ahead, we anticipate more moderate growth as the market stabilises."
